Long ago, in the glorious capital of Cheyvarman, nestled near the foot of the Kulen mountain range, lived a young girl named Silpavati, whose heart cherished learning above all else.

While other children spent their hours playing in the rice fields, Silpavati devoted her time within the monastery walls, pouring over thousands of ancient palm-leaf scriptures detailing science, astronomy, and architectural arts.

Some villagers remarked that her knowledge was a useless burden, arguing that the labor of planting and the strength to lift stones were the only true powers. Yet, Silpavati merely smiled and continued to gather the silent seeds of wisdom.

However, the peaceful prosperity of the village was soon shattered by a cruel and unprecedented drought, unlike any witnessed since the nation’s founding.

Lakes quickly evaporated, crops withered and died, and the village’s sacred primary water source—the large well near the temple—had dried completely, revealing only cracked earth at its base.

The men of the village marshaled their physical strength, marching out to dig new wells in every direction, desperately hoping to uncover a hidden underground stream.

They dug for days and nights until their bodies were utterly exhausted, yet the living water remained hidden. Their hope began to flicker like a lamp about to die.

It was then that Silpavati appeared, walking quietly into their midst, holding her ancient manuscript which was yellowed like a fallen autumn leaf.

She spoke to the elders: ‘O Venerable Ones! This lack of water is not merely nature’s denial, but perhaps a forgetting of the keys found within the ancient knowledge.’

She opened the Sleuk Rith, which spoke of harnessing water flow from the base of Kulen mountain through a complex, hidden channel system built during the time of the great kings.

“Based on the calculations of astronomy and the measurements detailed in geographical arts, I know the ancient conduit is blocked at one precise spot, beneath the great Banyan tree yonder.”

At first, the villagers were dubious and suspicious. They pondered: How could invisible knowledge possess more power than the visible strength of muscle?

Yet, driven by utter despair and having no other choice, they finally agreed to follow the young Silpavati toward the location she had precisely indicated.

She instructed them to dig exactly where the massive Banyan roots converged at a calculated point, not merely anywhere their whims dictated.

The men began to dig meticulously according to her instructions. Barely a meter down, they struck an ancient stone structure that had been buried and forgotten for centuries.

Beneath the structure, they indeed found the ancient water channel, but it was thoroughly choked by silt and invasive tree roots that had grown unchecked for generations.

Combining their brute strength with Silpavati’s learned guidance, they cleared the ancient sluice gate completely. Suddenly, the loud sound of rushing water echoed from the mountain.

The water flowed swiftly, refilling the dried well amidst the cheers of the entire population. They understood clearly that wisdom was the most precious wealth, surpassing gold and sheer physical labor combined.
