កាលពីព្រេងនាយ នៅជើងភ្នំគូលែន មានភូមិមួយដែលមានវាលស្រែខៀវខ្ចីលាតសន្ធឹងដល់ជើងមេឃ ទីនោះរស់នៅកុមារាម្នាក់ឈ្មោះចៅវិជ្ជា។ ចៅវិជ្ជាគឺជាអ្នកគង្វាលវ័យក្មេង ដែលភារកិច្ចប្រចាំថ្ងៃរបស់គេ គឺដឹកនាំហ្វូងគោទៅរកស្មៅស្រស់ និងទឹកថ្លា។
Long ago, nestled at the foot of Kulen Mountain, stood a village surrounded by emerald rice fields stretching toward the horizon. There lived a boy named Chao Vichea. Vichea was a young shepherd, whose daily duty was to guide the herd of cattle to fresh grass and clear water.
ចៅវិជ្ជាខុសពីក្មេងៗដទៃក្នុងភូមិ ដ្បិតគេមាននិស្ស័យមួយដ៏ពិសេសបំផុត គឺការគោរពពាក្យពិតលើសអ្វីទាំងអស់។ គេមិនដែលហ៊ាននិយាយកុហកសូម្បីតែរឿងតូចតាចបំផុតក៏ដោយ មិនថាការពិតនោះជូរចត់ ឬនាំឲ្យគេលំបាកប៉ុណ្ណាឡើយ។
Chao Vichea was different from the other children in the village, for he possessed a most profound characteristic: the reverence for the true word above all else. He never dared utter a lie, even about the most trivial matters, no matter how bitter or difficult that truth might be for him.

Some of his friends called him ‘the child without sweet lips,’ because he did not know how to flatter or say what people wished to hear. But his parents had taught him that truth (Satyadhamma) was the most precious jewel one could possess in life.

When the hot, dry season arrived, and the sun blazed like a fiery orb, a powerful merchant named Lok Meas (Mr. Gold) traveled to the village. Lok Meas was a man who loved flattery dearly and always promised great rewards to those who spoke kindly of him.

Lok Meas brought a large herd of his own cattle and proclaimed: ‘Whoever can speak the perfect truth about my herd in a flawless manner shall receive a pouch of gold.’
ក្មេងៗគង្វាលផ្សេងទៀតបានប្រញាប់ប្រញាល់ទៅមុខ ដោយម្នាក់ៗនិយាយសរសើរហួសហេតុពីភាពខ្លាំងនៃគោរបស់លោកមាស ទោះបីជាតាមពិតគោរបស់គាត់មួយចំនួនមានសភាពទ្រុឌទ្រោមបន្តិចក៏ដោយ។ ពួកគេចង់បានរង្វាន់នោះ។
The other shepherd boys rushed forward, each exaggerating the strength and magnificence of Lok Meas’s cattle, even though in reality, some of his cows looked slightly neglected. They desperately desired the reward.

Lok Meas smiled, but his expression betrayed a hint of boredom. Then, his gaze fell upon Chao Vichea, who stood silently in a corner, carefully observing the cattle, not the gold.

Chao Vichea spoke in a clear voice: ‘Your cattle are indeed strong creatures, yet they lack some necessary care. The cow at the rear has a foot sore, and that large bull is extremely thirsty.’

This precise truth astonished Lok Meas, and his servants began to panic. Lok Meas was slightly angered, but internally, he had to admit that Chao Vichea spoke correctly.

That same evening, an unforeseen incident occurred. Two of Lok Meas’s most valuable oxen vanished from the enclosure, which was supposedly locked securely. Panic broke out throughout the village.
លោកមាសបានកោះហៅអ្នកគង្វាលទាំងអស់មកសួរចម្លើយយ៉ាងតឹងរ៉ឹង ដោយសន្យាថានឹងដាក់ទោសធ្ងន់ដល់អ្នកណាដែលលាក់លៀមការពិត ឬជាចោរលួច។ មនុស្សជាច្រើននិយាយថា ពួកគេមិនដឹងអ្វីទាំងអស់ ឬនិយាយថា ពួកគេគិតថាវាជាការលួចរបស់ចោរពីក្រៅ។
Lok Meas summoned all the shepherds for a stern interrogation, promising severe punishment for anyone who concealed the truth or was the thief. Many claimed ignorance or suggested that outside bandits must have committed the theft.

When it was Chao Vichea’s turn, Lok Meas looked at him with a penetrating gaze and said: ‘Chao Vichea, you are the one who loves the true word. Now, tell me without reservation, what did you see last night?’
ចៅវិជ្ជាបានដកដង្ហើមវែងៗ ហើយនិយាយថា៖ «លោកម្ចាស់ គ្មានចោរលួចអ្វីទេកាលពីយប់មិញ។ នៅវេលាព្រលប់ខ្ញុំបានឃើញអ្នកបម្រើរបស់លោក ឈ្មោះអាគង់ បានចាកចេញពីក្រោល ហើយភ្លេចបិទទ្វារដែកឲ្យជិត។ គោទាំងពីរក្បាលនោះបានដើរចេញទៅរកស្មៅស្រស់ដោយខ្លួនឯង»។
Chao Vichea took a deep breath and stated: ‘My Lord, there was no thief last night. Near dusk, I saw your servant, Ah Kong, leave the enclosure and fail to secure the heavy iron gate properly. The two oxen merely wandered out themselves, seeking fresher grazing grounds.’

This truth struck Lok Meas directly, exposing the negligence of his own trusted servant. The servant whom Vichea had named immediately tried to deny the accusation, shouting furiously.

But Chao Vichea ignored the shouting. He walked to the soft earth near the pen and pointed to the clear, precise oxen footprints leading toward the jungle’s edge. ‘If you follow this track northward, my Lord, you will find them grazing peacefully.’
លោកមាសបានបញ្ជូនមនុស្សទៅតាមទិសដៅដែលចៅវិជ្ជាប្រាប់ ហើយពិតជាបានរកឃើញគោទាំងពីរក្បាលនោះមែន។ ពេលត្រឡប់មកវិញ លោកមាសមិនត្រឹមតែមិនខឹងនឹងចៅវិជ្ជាទេ តែគាត់បានដឹងគុណយ៉ាងជ្រាលជ្រៅចំពោះភាពក្លាហានរបស់គេ។
Lok Meas dispatched men in the direction Chao Vichea indicated, and indeed, they found both oxen safe. Upon his return, Lok Meas was not angry with Vichea; instead, he felt deep gratitude for the boy’s courage.
លោកមាសបានផ្តល់រង្វាន់មាសមួយថង់ធំដល់ចៅវិជ្ជា ហើយនិយាយថា៖ «កុមារាអើយ ការពិតរបស់ឯងមិនមែនជាមាត់ផ្អែមទេ តែវាជាមូលដ្ឋានដ៏រឹងមាំបំផុតនៃការជឿទុកចិត្ត។ ខ្ញុំបានរៀនមេរៀនមួយនៅថ្ងៃនេះ គឺពាក្យពិតមានតម្លៃជាងមាសរាប់ពាន់ដង»។ ហើយចាប់ពីពេលនោះមក ចៅវិជ្ជាត្រូវបានគេគោរពជាវីរៈបុរសដែលមិនខ្លាចពាក្យពិត។
Lok Meas awarded Chao Vichea a large pouch of gold and said: ‘Child, your truth may not be sweet, but it is the most solid foundation for trust. I have learned a lesson today: the true word is worth a thousand times more than gold.’ And from that day forward, Chao Vichea was revered as the hero who feared no truth.
